What?
Road places

We want to give notice of the real portuguese territory, the territory forgotten on the news reality, which is, maybe, ashamed with those urban landscapes that contaminate the country «purities». The road is itself a contamination happening. Its reality increases the need to think about the space-time factor in the architects gaze to the place or set of places, Also, the road demands from the architect a very tangible response in the realm of scale, proportion and form.

Why?
There are many research goals and questions to justify the themes of the competition. Would it be possible to have a sense of community in each place along the road? Or is it inevitable the diffusion of the road space, as a homogeneous continuum, with no chance for a place to be a place? There’s a very interesting aspect about the toponymy of these road place: despite the national road has a unique name, each community / village gives a different street name for its portion of the road.

Where?
Northwest of Portugal, metropolitan area of Porto. Like Portugal, it is mainly sold by images as a tradable object, as a touristic product. So, purposely, the place will not afford of any beach, monument or historical centre. We suggest a local work -anchored in a place- but with a global effect -opened to the road. The plot is located in Castelo da Maia -in the North border of Porto metropolitan Area- and it is mainly occupied by an industrial ruin.(which can be decided to preserve, demolish, or add some construction). It’s biggest side faces the national road Porto-Braga (N 14), The plot is intersected by a junction of various urban happenings : the underground line, the road, the university, etc. There’s a intention to question its dependence from the Porto centre. Cohabitant with this urban reality, we can find agricultural landscapes. The place represents various binomials: urban/rural, industrial/agricultural, pedestrian/ vehicle, formal / informal, popular/ erudite, local/global, ruin / heritage.

Program
The service station is the most privileged stopping point along the road places. Because of that, more and more it gathers a lot of services, added to the conventional store, like bar, restaurant, jet wash, etc. To boost this quality of centralize people and goods, we would like to add a commercial area for artists (with their ateliers) and a retail plant nursery. We believe in the potential of the informality of these urban spaces to generate new cultural phenomenon.
